A historic military site dating back to the 1700s, when it served as a cavalry drill ground for the Norwegian army. It functioned as a key military airbase throughout the 20th century before being redeveloped into Norway's primary international hub in 1998. While officially designated "Oslo Airport," the name Gardermoen is maintained to distinguish its geographic location 35 km north of the capital.
